uninstall a surprise gnome install from your debian testing xfce desktop.

2013-07-04

I boot up my Debian Testing XFCE machine, login to a slow startup and surprise it's F'ing gnome 3 shell.

WTF?!?!?!  This is not what I had in mind for 4th of July fireworks.  I hate this bullshit!  Seriously, Debian testing just installed gnome without my authority!??!?! (Granted, yes i know nothing happens without authority -- updates suck sometimes)

sudo aptitude purge gnome-applets gnome-session-fallback gnome-control-center-data gnome-control-center gnome-media gnome-online-accounts gnome-bluetooth gnome-panel-data gnome-panel mousetweaks gnome-panel gnome-session gnome-shell  ; sudo reboot

ahhhh much better!!!!

but now i'm aggravated...

sudo shutdown -h now

walking away...

  1. I felt exactly the same way after selecting xfce desktop in the Debian installer and then being confronted by an infernal gnome 3 shell. I then did a basic install without desktop env - arguing that I could install xfce manually afterwards.

Unfortunately, in order to save time (or so I thought), I made the mistake of installing task-xfce-desktop. Turns out that this is the one that pulls in all the gnome dependencies; my guess is that this is the very same package flagged for installation when selecting xfce-desktop from the installer. Finally got it right by doing another base system install, followed by installation of package xfce.

This was done on a VM in order to check out the latest testing release (Jessie) and play around with Btrfs. I switched my desktop & laptop to xfce soon after gnome 3 was released - using the then-current testing distro (wheezy) - and also installed the same on a friend's laptop just a month or two ago, and had none of this type of cr**p going on.

If nothing else, this experience served to reaffirm to me how much faster and user-friendly xfce is compared to gnome 3.

Thanks for the opportunity to rant a bit.

  2. Xfce is a lightweight desktop environment for UNIX-like operating systems. It aims to be fast and low on system resources, while still being visually appealing and user friendly.

To install Xfce on debian 7 wheezy
    # apt-get install xorg xfce4 xfce4-goodies thunar-archive-plugin synaptic gdebi wicd

    To install extra XFCE packages
    # apt-get install xdg-utils xfce4-power-manager xfce4-goodies htop bzip2 zip unzip unrar-free

There are more gui to choose from http://namhuy.net/1085/install-gui-on-debian-7-wheezy.html
